MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte has announced that he is placing the entire Metro Manila under “community quarantine” starting March 15. In a televised address to the nation on March 12, Duterte also said that the Department of Health (DOH) has raised the alert level to Code Red Sub-level 2 – the highest level there is.
The increase in reported local transmissions of COVID-19 is the reason behind raising the alert level and the lockdown, Duterte said. The Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police will be deployed during the said lockdown to maintain peace and order and to make sure that the people will observe and obey the restrictions in place.
The announcement comes at a time where the number of infected in the Philippines has increased to 52. There are cases already reported outside of NCR – two in Negros and one in Northern Mindanao.
